Cardiology

The heart can be compared to a double pump. The "right" heart ensures circulation in the lungs and the oxygenation of the blood while the "left" heart sends blood throughout the rest of the body.

Dogs and cats can get heart disease, congenital or acquired with age. Most induce changes in cardiac auscultation (souffle, gallop sound, tachycardia) but some are inaudible except when the disease is very advanced. It is then necessary to carry out screening within the predisposed breeds.

The establishment of an appropriate treatment depends on the exact determination of the heart disease but also on its stage.. Its early implementation can significantly prolong life expectancy IN GOOD CONDITIONS of your companion. For it, two complementary examinations are essential : echocardiography and chest x-ray.

It may also be useful to carry out an electrocardiogram because certain diseases can cause cardiac arrhythmia, or this arrhythmia may be primary with no underlying structural abnormality.

When detecting heart disease, it will then be advisable to carry out a regular follow-up at least annually for stable diseases that are not very advanced at all 4-6 months for those at a more advanced stage.

Within the AnimoVet clinic, the Dr Sandra BOURDET-LAURENT performs echocardiographic examinations and heart disease monitoring and screening.

C'est examen est indolore, your pet is standing during this one. Dog ultrasounds are to be expected during the day (about 1 hour exam + debriefing). About cats, nous préférons les hospitaliser une matinée et découper l'examen en plusieurs sessions si nécessaire car leur patience est mise à rude épreuve.
